Split
Split is M. Night Shyamalan's best movie in years, and James McAvoy is a big reason why. McAvoy plays a man with dissociative identity disorder who has 23 different personalities. Some of these personalities are played by the actor himself. The story is about a man named Kevin Wendell Crumb who kidnaps and locks up three teenage girls. Anya Taylor Joy plays one of the girls. UwatchFree movies com safe from the annoying advert content and spywares.
The movie moves quickly, keeping things interesting and exciting the whole time. Even though a last-minute scene connecting it to Unbreakable showed promise, Glass didn't live up to its full potential. But it's best to think of this as a one-off, an original story, which Shyamalan has often been very good at coming up with, no matter what you think of him.
Annihilation
This year, Alex Garland's most recent movie, Men, got strong and very different reactions. It probably shouldn't have come as a surprise because he's never been one to take the easy or safe way out. Annihilation was Garland's second movie to direct after Ex Machina. It is about a biology professor and army veteran named Lena, played by Natalie Portman. When her husband comes back from a mysterious place called the Shimmer and falls into a coma, Lena leads an expedition to find out what happened.
This movie could have been a typical science fiction action movie, but instead it goes in a much more interesting and thematically rich direction. Even though it has some scary parts, it's hard to put into one category, and at times it's more of a mind-bending trip than anything else. People may have different opinions about the big ending scene, but there's no denying that Annihilation is a very ambitious movie that's worth seeing.
Prisoners
Before Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, there was the thriller Prisoners. It was the first movie that director Denis Villeneuve made in English. It has a great cast, including Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, and Paul Dano. It's a very disturbing and tense movie that gets under your skin right away.
Keller Dover, played by Jackman, has his daughter and the daughter of his next-door neighbour taken. Gyllenhaal plays the detective who is trying to find the girls. He puts Alex Jones, also known as Dano, in jail, but when there isn't enough evidence to keep him there, Dover takes matters into his own hands. It's a thriller that's not for the faint of heart and has some shockingly violent scenes, but it's completely gripping, moving, and creates an atmosphere that will stay with you in the way that all the best thrillers do.
Okja
Bong Joon-ho is best known now for his Oscar-winning drama Parasite, but a few years ago, he made a Netflix movie called Okja that was just as powerful. The movie is a collaboration between South Korea and the United States. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton, among others, and is about a young girl named Mija who raised a genetically modified "super pig" named Okja.
When Okja is taken to the US, tragedy happens, and from that point on, it's safe to say that the movie isn't easy to watch. Make sure you're in the right mood to watch this one. It's a heartbreaking and brutal look at the meat industry, as well as a look at capitalism and other themes that are relevant today. If you are, it's a stunningly thoughtful and powerful film.
The Bad Education Movie
The news came out earlier this year that Bad Education will be back, starting with a Christmas special this year and a new season next year. Now is the perfect time to catch up on the antics of Jack Whitehall's bumbling teacher Alfie Wickers.
In this movie, Mr. Wickers takes his Form K class on a trip to Cornwall. As you might expect, things don't go as planned because they get caught up in the activities of the "Cornish Liberation Army." It's a broad comedy, and the jokes are often rude. Not everyone will like it, but if you're a fan of the series, this film is a fun way to end the first season. The action is stepped up, but the show's heart and humour are still there.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie
Since the 1980s, different versions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been shown in comics, animated shows, movies, video games, and even toys. Now, the pop culture phenomenon is back in a Netflix and Nickelodeon animated action movie.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie came out on Netflix in early August. It tells the story of Casey Jones, who is sent back in time by Leonardo after a terrible invasion by the Krang. The plan is simple: find the Turtles in the past to stop the end of the world from happening.
Even though the plot isn't very complicated, there is a lot of action and all the fights and jokes we expect from a Turtles movie.
School of Rock
This school comedy from 2003 is without a doubt a true classic and a high point of both Jack Black's and Richard Linklater's careers. Black plays Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck want tobe rock star who pretends to be his flatmate to get a job as a substitute teacher. Once he gets there, he sees that the kids are good at music and puts them to work making a group that can win the Battle of the Bands.
It's a very sweet and very funny movie, with a heart in the right place. Black does a great job as Finn, and the cast of students is one of the best groups of child actors I've seen in recent years. Some of the songs will also stick with you long after the movie is over.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
With Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series coming out soon, you can go back to Tolkien's Middle-earth early by watching all of The Hobbit on Netflix. We think that this chapter, "The Desolation of Smaug," in the middle of the series is the best, because it has enough story and action to match Jackson's ambitions.
Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, and the rest of the cast give it their all in this movie, and Bilbo's fight with Smaug is one of the best parts of the whole series. The last movie in the trilogy may not have lived up to the promise of this chapter's killer cliffhanger, and it's clear that this story could have been told in less time, but if you want a good time and a fast-paced adventure, this is your best bet in The Hobbit trilogy.
