(CNN)Americans may need to get a single Covid-19 vaccination every year, federal health officials said Tuesday, making clear that the country will be living with the coronavirus for the foreseeable future.
"This week marks an important shift in our fight against the virus," said Dr. Ashish Jha, who is leading the White House Covid-19 Response Team. "It marks our ability to make Covid vaccines a more routine part of our lives as we continue to drive down serious illness and deaths and protect Americans heading into the fall and winter."
Though Tuesday's announcement isn't a surprise - the Biden administration has been hinting at such a shift since the spring - it is a significant moment as the government continues to de-escalate its pandemic response.

Jha said the newly authorized updated Covid-19 boosters would be free of charge to all who qualify and want them, but future vaccines and treatments may not be, as funding for the pandemic response dwindles and the government begins to shift therapeutics to the commercial market.
Vaccine experts said the shift to yearly shots signals that Covid-19 isn't going away.
"Our great-great-grandchildren will be getting coronavirus vaccines," said Dr. Gregory Poland, who directs the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. "Just like you and I, when we get our flu vaccine this fall, one of the components we'll get is derived from the 1918 pandemic influenza virus, and 100-plus years later, we're still immunizing against it."
Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said on Twitter that it could be the right time to move to annual boosters if we could answer some key questions, like how well do the updated shots work?
"What do you put in next year's shots?" Hotez tweeted. "What global surveillance mechanisms need to be implemented to identify early strains?"
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Tuesday that although he expects this fall to be the beginning of annual shots for Covid-19, those who have weakened immune systems might need more frequent protection.
"In the absence of a dramatically different variant, we likely are moving towards a path with a vaccination cadence similar to that of the annual influenza vaccine, with annual updated Covid-19 shots matched to the currently circulating strains for most of the population," he said.
Fauci said the latest boosters should continue to protect Americans as long as the coronavirus changes incrementally, drifting away from the currently circulating BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants.
He acknowledged that the plan to give annual shots might need to be revised if the coronavirus makes a significant evolutionary leap, as it did when the Omicron variant surfaced around Thanksgiving. He likened this to an "out-of-left-field curveball."
"There's nothing we can do about that except know that we have vaccine platforms that will allow us to quickly move to address that," Fauci said.
But he stressed that barring any big changes to the virus, the updated boosters should continue to protect in the year ahead and could be updated annually.
Jha urged Americans 12 and older to take advantage of the updated boosters, stressing that it was the first time the country has had vaccines that match the currently circulating variants.
He also said people should get their flu shots at the same time as their Covid-19 vaccines.
"I really believe this is why God gave us two arms, one for the flu shot and one for the Covid shot," Jha quipped.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Tuesday that "the benefits of being up to date on your Covid-19 vaccines are clear."

CHICAGO -- Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza tested positive for COVID-19 Sunday morning, her office announced.

Mendoza is vaccinated and boosted and thankful to be experiencing just mild symptoms, the announcement said.

She has canceled a full schedule of events, including an important address about Illinois' finances she was scheduled to deliver to the City Club of Chicago on Tuesday, the announcement said. That event is being rescheduled for Sept. 14 in downtown Chicago.

Ex-minister Liam Fox gets donation from Covid

Mr Fox recommended SureScreen Diagnostics to Mr Hancock in 2020, an email seen by campaign group Good Law Project and the BBC shows.
The company went on to win a £500m contract to provide tests without facing competition.
A spokesperson for Mr Fox said the story was a "baseless smear".
It was "concocted by the political activist Jolyon Maugham and the Good Law Project", the spokesman said, and Mr Fox would be making a complaint.
"It is appalling that this should be propagated by the BBC," the statement issued after publication, added.
SureScreen said it had never paid for any government lobbying activity.
A director of the Derbyshire-based firm emailed Mr Fox in June 2020 to say that they were sending millions of antibody tests for use in hospitals in Germany, Spain and Sweden.
They said it was "crazy" that the tests could not be used in the UK, because they had not been approved by Public Health England.
At the time, before lateral flow tests - which detect current infection - became routinely available for use at home, some argued antibody tests were a way of allowing people who could prove they had previously had the virus to come out of lockdown.
Mr Fox immediately forwarded SureScreen's email to Mr Hancock, telling the then health secretary: "I don't think the British people would understand or approve of the widespread export of this capability when we will have a huge need at home."
This email was obtained by the Good Law Project through a Freedom of Information request.

It is not clear what resulted from Mr Fox's intervention over the antibody tests.
But seven months later the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) directly awarded SureScreen a contract worth £500m to supply a different type of antigen test, which shows current infection.
The government said they were the first British tests to be validated in the laboratory by Public Health England.
According to its parent company's most recent set of accounts, SureScreen Diagnostics posted profits before tax of £67.2m for the year ending May 2021.
That is 75 times higher than the figure for the previous year.
The Good Law Project, which has sued the government over its use of emergency powers to make deals with firms without opening them to competition, said the donation raised questions.
"How many times do corporates need to give money to Tory MPs after getting help winning vast public contracts before concluding we have a cash for contracts problem," the Project's executive director Jolyon Maugham said.
"We know perfectly well what we'd call conduct like this if we saw it happening in another country."
SureScreen said it was not aware that Mr Fox had been in touch with Mr Hancock in 2020 until this was pointed out to them by the BBC.

The southern Chinese tech hub Shenzhen tightened COVID curbs as cases continued to mount on Thursday, with large events and indoor entertainment suspended for three days in the city's most populous district, Baoan.

At least half of the Shenzhen's ten districts, home to over 13 million of the city's residents, have now ordered blanket closures of entertainment venues and halted or reduced restaurant dining.

Education authorities have postponed the start of the new school semester, which was largely planned to begin on Thursday.

Officials urged residents not to leave the city unless on urgent matters in a statement issued late on Wednesday.

Residents who must leave have to show proof of two negative tests within 48 hours, according to the statement.

Authorities have traced a cluster of cases to a dance hall in the city's central business district of Futian, and were urging recent visitors there to report themselves to local health authorities.

Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s preeminent infectious-disease expert who achieved unprecedented fame while enduring withering political attacks as the face of the coronavirus pandemic response under two presidents, plans to step down in December after more than a half-century of public service, he announced Monday.

Fauci, 81, has led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984. He joined the parent agency, the National Institutes of Health, in 1968 as a 27-year-old doctor who had just finished medical residency and was quickly identified as a rising star. Most recently, Fauci has also served as President Biden’s chief medical adviser since the start of his administration.

Fauci’s tenure as director of the infectious-diseases institute made him an adviser to seven presidents and put him on the front lines of every modern-day scourge, including AIDS, the 2001 anthrax scares, Ebola, Zika and the coronavirus pandemic. During the nearly four decades Fauci led the agency, it grew from a little-known institute with a $350 million annual budget to a globally recognized powerhouse with a budget exceeding $6 billion.

“Because of Dr. Fauci’s many contributions to public health, lives here in the United States and around the world have been saved,” said Biden, who as vice president worked with Fauci on the nation’s response to Ebola and Zika during the Obama administration. “Whether you’ve met him personally or not, he has touched all Americans’ lives with his work.”

While Fauci is one of the most cited researchers of all time and has been widely known in scientific circles for decades, it was the coronavirus pandemic that catapulted him to worldwide fame — and ignited criticism from some Republican politicians and threats from the public.

Fauci, who spoke about his impending departure in a wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, had been a lightning rod before, most notably during the early days of the AIDS crisis when activists clamored for a swifter government response as they watched friends die. But the coronavirus pandemic arrived in a strikingly different era, with social media pouring fuel on the criticism and baseless conspiracy theories leveled at Fauci and others presiding over the federal government’s response.

The veteran scientist acknowledged missteps: In the early weeks of the pandemic, Fauci and other government scientists said Americans did not need to wear masks, which President Donald Trump seized on toward the end of his presidency to criticize Fauci and to question his expertise. And, like many other disease detectives, Fauci did not recognize early on that asymptomatic people were prime spreaders of the virus.

Fauci conceded that he and other government scientists were wrong about masks in the beginning. He said they were worried about having enough face coverings for overwhelmed health-care workers and did not yet see evidence that masks were effective in preventing infection outside of hospitals, which later became clear, particularly as scientists realized the virus was airborne.

Those factors “led the surgeon general of the United States, the CDC and me to say, right now, you really don’t need to wear a mask and all of a sudden, it became Tony Fauci is the mask guy,” Fauci said. “Since I am the primary target of the far right, when the far right says you got it wrong, it isn’t that everybody got it wrong — it’s that Tony Fauci got it wrong.”

The last 2½ years marked some of the most rewarding and challenging times of his career, Fauci said. His public contradictions of Trump over unproven covid-19 treatments and the threat posed by the pandemic and his advocacy of mitigation measures made Fauci a villain to the political right.

“It was one of the most important challenges that we have had to face, and I believe my team and I — and let history be the judge of that — have made a major contribution,” Fauci said. “We didn’t do it alone, but we played a major role in the development of the vaccines that have now saved millions of lives.”

But Fauci said the pandemic, which has claimed more than 1 million lives in the United States, proved “extremely stressful.”

He attributed that to the combination of dealing with a novel virus that has shown a remarkable propensity to infect people and mutated with breathtaking speed and the politically charged environment in which the government had to run a response. That, coupled with his fame and the attention given to his public statements, made making mistakes and communicating changing scientific guidance to the public immensely harder, he said.

In the interview, Fauci said he wanted to step down from his government post while still healthy, energetic and passionate about his field and enthusiastic about the next stage of his career.

He also reflected on anti-science sentiments that have proliferated, mistakes he and other scientists made during the pandemic, deep national divisions infecting politics that have put democracy at risk, and lessons learned from the government and national response to the coronavirus.

Fauci emphasized that he is not exiting the public square. He said he hopes to teach, lecture, write — perhaps a book, along with essays and other types of writing — and use his experience to inspire and teach a younger generation of scientists.

“I love everything about this place. … But even with that, I said I’m going to have to leave some time,” Fauci said. “I don’t want to be here so long that I get to the point where I lose a step.”
