If your little kid (or big kid) loves dinosaurs, this is an easy party to create and have fun with. There are lots of 500 toothed dinosaur themed party goods available and you can set the scene using your child's dinosaur toys. Cardboard cut outs and blow up dinosaurs really help it come to life.

The cake

There are lots of cake ideas - some may take a little creativity but others are very simple. Toy plastic dinosaurs make great cake toppers with green icing, or fake grass made from green sprinkles. Then surround your toy dinosaur with speckled candy eggs for effect and a great treat with each piece of cake. Fondant dinosaurs look great on cakes. Make your own in bright colors, or there are many store bought ones. Or perhaps use a dinosaur shaped cake tin to make a big dinosaur and go to town with green icing and colored candy for decorations.

Another great idea is a rectangular chocolate cake covered in chocolate icing, scoop out parts of the cake and place dinosaur 'bones' in the holes (made of white fondant icing), a few small diggers and tracks on the top helps to finish the dinosaur dig scene. Or an easier option is to make a number cake for your child's age and decorate with toy dinosaurs.

The food

Dinosaur hunters love to eat lots of dinosaur themed treats! Fossil biscuits look amazing you only need to make simple vanilla cookies and use a toy dinosaur, or the foot of a dinosaur toy to imprint a fossil before you bake. Another option is to make white chocolate crackles with green food coloring, then shape into mounds and place red icing to look like lava flowing down the sides, or meringues shaped as dinosaur bones.

Other options are:

• Chocolate crackles in cupcake wrappers with speckled candy eggs, these make great dinosaur egg nests

• Dino shapes - chicken nuggets, available in most supermarkets

• There are also a number of dinosaur shaped crackers and biscuits available.

• Jungle slime jelly with creatures of the deep suspended inside - using lollies such as snakes, etc.

• Liquid chocolate mud in cups with fruit shaped as bones for dipping

• Bubbly red or green drinks in clear bottles, with grapes bubbling around

• Vege forest with green and brown dips

The games

The type of games will depend on the age of the dinosaur birthday child. For the younger ones try:

• Find the dinosaur - hide toy dinosaurs around the garden for the children to find

• Dino dig - bury dinosaur bones in a sand pit for the children to find

• Stomp and roar like a dinosaur - while the music is on the children stomp and roar and when it stops they must stay still in their best dino pose.

• Pin the tail on the dinosaur

• Pass the archeologist's sack - fill with digging equipment and toys

• What's the time T-Rex?

If your guests are a bit older you could buy a dinosaur bone model (or puzzle), hide the pieces and send the children on a hunt (give clues on pieces of paper to make it even more fun) then come together to make the model. Or create an ancient map for small groups to follow and find the dinosaur bones along the way, then let them construct their own unique giant dinosaur - you can make the dinosaur bones from cardboard and paint them for a great effect (don't worry if it's not a perfect dinosaur, that's half the fun)

Older dinosaur buffs may also enjoy a game of celebrity heads dinosaur. Write some dinosaur names on cards and place on headbands, children take turns asking yes/ no questions to determine which one they are eg. "Am I a meat eater?'", "Do I fly?"

The extras

Be creative with the invitations, for the little ones a bright and colourful dinosaur will do the trick or attach a tag with all the details of the party to a toy and for the older guests an ancient map rolled up and tied with string is a great invitation. Create the ultimate Dinosaur party in the back yard by putting up a tent and setting up a campsite with folding tables and chairs. Use some streamers, ropes and nets as great decorations and use lots of greens and oranges to set the scene. Deposit some sand in and around the tent and make sure the sand pit is ready for the games.

Happy Birthday Bunting with a cut out dinosaur bone head and a letter in each of the dinosaur back bones looks great. As the guests arrive, get them into the mood by giving everyone a panama hat and an archeologist's sack to start the games, these can them become the party favor for each guest.

Other favors could include little plastic dinosaurs, dinosaur lollies, dinosaur stamps and digging toys. Or you could just opt for one large favor of a dino egg which opens and expands in water (about $4-$5)- wrap the box in a big green ribbon with a couple of snake lollies tied in the bow. An individual dinosaur dig kit is also a wonderful favor.

It can be difficult for Mums and Dads to keep up with the busy social lives of their young charges once they get to school age. For most there is the almost weekly ordeal of having to take their children to a classmate's birthday party. With class sizes in many cases exceeding 30 pupils, there can be a party to attend every weekend and then of course you are faced with the challenge of reciprocating when it is your child's birthday. However, help is at hand as with the assistance of my colleagues, some of whom actually study fossils of nigersaurus and dig up dinosaurs, we can hopefully, pass on some tips to help ensure a dinosaur themed party is a roaring success. We know how much of a challenge organising a children's party can be. However, we can help when it comes to a dinosaur themed birthday party, hopefully taking out some of the strain and worry.

Dinosaurs and prehistoric animals are universally popular with young children. Indeed, the Order Dinosauria seems to have captured the imagination of the public almost from its inception in the early 1840's by the anatomist Sir Richard Owen. As a teacher, I have been able to blend in dinosaurs into all sorts of teaching activities and with a little imagination the sorts of exercises carried out in the classroom can be adapted to help spark young children's imaginations at a dinosaur themed birthday party.

Choosing inexpensive Dinosaur Models as Party Gifts

An inexpensive assortment of plastic dinosaur models can be used to fill out the party gift bag, but why not take a little time to consider the model selection and then involve the young party goers in a fun to play party game to help them "earn" the right to take a plastic dinosaur home. There are so many different model series to select from these days, most stores have packs of reasonably priced models in varying shades and colours. However, rather than purchase a pack, try to see if you can find any presented in a box, so that you can handle them. This gives you the opportunity to test them out, to see if they actually stand up. Beware the bipedal (two-footed) dinosaur models, many of the cheaper sets have bipedal dinosaur models that don't actually stand up on their own two feet (as it were). Bipedal dinosaurs include popular prehistoric animals such a Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor and it would be a shame to have to give a party goer a dinosaur model that actually doesn't stand up. We refer to these as tipsy dinosaurs, but if unsure as to what would work best for your young charges, select four-footed animals (quadrupeds), these tend to be much more stable and are very unlikely to fall over.

In reality, palaeontologists still marvel at how large Theropods (bipedal, meat-eaters such as Tyrannosaurus rex), were able to run around and generally support their great bulk whilst walking on their toes (digitigrade stance), this is one of the mysteries of the Order Dinosauria. The structure of the ankle bones in a dinosaur is one of the main distinguishing characteristics, between dinosaurs and other ancient reptiles. A strong joint between the foot bones and the bones of the hind leg is a key feature of dinosaurs and this foot/limb configuration gave these creatures a distinct advantage when compared to the locomotive abilities of other primeval reptile groups.

No matter what your reason for selecting a particular range of prehistoric animal models, these inexpensive items can be used as the basis for a simple to organise and fun to create dinosaur game. Why not send your young party goers on their very own dinosaur hunt?

Organising a Dinosaur Party Game - A Dinosaur Hunt

Rather than simply giving a little prehistoric animal away in your party goody bag, why not help the young palaeontologists to burn up some energy and have the fun of finding their own dinosaur model to take home? Hide the models so that every child at the party can have a go at hunting their own dinosaur.

This game can be adapted to be played either outdoors in indoors; we do appreciate that sometimes the weather can dash the best-laid plans of the home party planner.

When we play this game, we make a note of where we have hidden the particular model and then write the name of the prehistoric animal on a piece of paper with a clue as to where the dinosaur might be lurking. All the papers are folded up and put into a box, a hat or some other handy container. Often the dinosaur party host is a very willing helper, assisting with the writing out of the names, identifying the animals using one of the many ubiquitous dinosaur books in most young people's collections and even helping to theme up the box using stickers and dinosaur drawings. The young dinosaur fan will no doubt provide a lot of expert opinion on dinosaur "dos and don'ts". It is amazing how much knowledge children can absorb, especially if they like the subject matter.

Each child then takes it in turn to pick a piece of paper out of the hat, they study the name of the dinosaur and the clue and off they go to try and find their prehistoric animal. The adult supervising the activity can provide some assistance and advice but this activity is great to help the young dinosaur fans burn up some energy as they run around trying to be the first to round up their dinosaur. Once they have retrieved their model, they return to the adult with the box or hat that had been filled with the names and try to pronounce the name of the prehistoric animal in question. Pronunciation guides can be found in the glossary section of most children's dinosaur books and the pictures provided can help you to identify the prehistoric animals represented by the models.

Once the young budding palaeontologist has located their prehistoric animal they can have a go at pronouncing the name. Then it is simply a case of putting the prehistoric model into the party gift bag or gift box so that once the party is over they can take it home. Be sure to check that each child has a labelled goody bag, it wouldn't do to mix up the dinosaur models at this stage. Most quality gift bags have a name tag section, where each recipients name can be written clearly. You can always print off some dinosaur pictures form the numerous web site resources and use these as innovative name tags for your party goody bags.

The game is easy to set up, works really well if you can go outside into the yard or garden and helps children use up some of their energy before tucking into the birthday tea. It fits into the dinosaur theme and is a lot of fun to play. We especially like the idea of being able to mix in a little bit of learning regarding dinosaur models the child has "discovered" - slipping in a little bit of science and educational material without the children realising it. If young children can have fun with science as they play then this has got to be a good idea.

Best of all, in the competitive world of birthday parties for classmates, Mums and Dads can score one or two brownie points amongst their peers by providing an innovative and fun educational exercise for their young party guests.

Rex Appeal - Why are Dinosaurs So Popular

Dinosaurs, or to be more precise dinosaur has 500 teeth, may have been extinct for sixty-five million years but they seem to have found themselves very much at home in our society and culture. Many children go through a phase of being fascinated with these prehistoric animals, many retain this fascination as adults and with the plethora of television programmes, books, films and websites dedicated to dinosaurs their popularity shows no sign of waning. This article sets out to explore this phenomenon and suggests some reasons why these ancient reptiles still enthral us today.

The Birth of the Term - Dinosauria

The term Dinosaur, was first officially coined by the Lancashire born, English anatomist, Richard Owen in 1842. He was to be knighted later in his life for his work in developing the embryonic Earth sciences and for helping to found the British Museum, known today as the Natural History Museum of London. Owen had been given the task of classifying the strange fossil remains that had been discovered over the years in southern England. He had correctly deduced that these bones represented reptiles; but their size and scale was like nothing known to the scientists of the late Georgian and early Victorian eras. Using the conventions laid down for formal scientific description, Owen concluded that these strange fossil remains represented reptiles so different from those alive at the time that they merited their own taxonomic Order. He chose the name Dinosauria using the Greek for "fearfully great lizards", or as many people refer to dinosaurs today as - "terrible lizards".

Owen, in what many academics now believe was a deliberate attempt on his part to gain credit for the work of others or in a bid to discredit his contemporaries, stated that he had used the term Dinosauria as early as 1841, several months before the term was officially accepted.

At the time the Order was announced there were very few recognised members of the Dinosaur family, barely a handful in fact, but with the opening up of the western United States and Canada, soon a huge number of dinosaur discoveries were being made and many more dinosaur genera were added to this ancient group of reptiles scientific classification.

In England during the mid to late Victorian era, studying the natural world was thought to be an appropriate pastime for the learned gentry, the clergy and other educated classes. With this national interest and against the controversial backdrop of the development of Darwinism (the ground breaking book on natural selection written by Charles Darwin was first published in 1859); museums and other bodies arranged displays of fossils of long-extinct, ancient creatures. These proved very popular and indeed a number of travelling shows peddling a range of "curiosities" including dinosaur fossils imported from the United States toured the country helping to cater for the Victorians interest and passion for the natural world.

First the Giant Mammals and then the Dinosaurs

At first, it was the prehistoric mammals that held centre stage, fossils of animals such as the armadillo-like Glyptodonts and Giant Sloths that had been discovered in South America. Sir Richard Owen was responsible for formally classifying a number of these animals. Indeed, he named a species of giant sloth (Mylodon darwini), after Charles Darwin, a friend of his at the time, although the two men were to fall out over Darwin's theory of natural selection and the concept of species being immutable. These prehistoric mammal fossils were more abundant in relative terms than dinosaur fossils and large numbers of such specimens were finding their way into Europe as South and Central America was explored and opened up. With the expansion of American settlers into the western half of the United States, more and more spectacular dinosaur fossils were being found and it was the dinosaurs and their remains that were to take hold of the public's imagination.

Museums and universities competed against each other for bigger and more complete dinosaur fossils. The late 1870s and 1880s saw a huge rise in members of the Dinosauria. Very well-known dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Allosaurus and Triceratops were all officially named and described during this period when there was a sort of "gold rush" for dinosaur bones, with wealthy individuals sponsoring excavations for the prestige of finding bigger and better specimens.

Rex Appeal - Why are Dinosaurs so Popular?

From the late 1880s onwards the Dinosauria has never looked back. Today more than 1,000 separate genera have been described and dinosaurs (plus Pterosaurs and marine reptiles) have proved to be an endless subject of fascination for the public. But why are these long extinct creatures so popular?

Firstly, writers and film makers have used dinosaurs in a number of projects. Dinosaurs and their kind are not out of the media for very long. Team members at Everything Dinosaur have estimated that a new dinosaur species is named and described every twenty days or so. Often such announcements are picked up and carried by the world's media. Winsor McCay produced the first film featuring a dinosaur in 1914. This short, animated feature starred "Gertie the Dinosaur", a long-necked Sauropod. McCay had used "Gertie" in his travelling show for a number of years, no doubt latching onto the popularity of big dinosaurs such as the Sauropods as the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie had been busily organising copies of the amazingly well-preserved fossil skeletons of these animals found on expeditions funded by his vast fortune that had been unearthed in the western United States. Dinosaurs with their fearsome reputation have been frightening movie goers ever since, from the days of stop motion animation right up to the CGI spectaculars of today. Indeed, the "Jurassic Park" trilogy - "Jurassic Park", "The Lost World" and "Jurassic Park III" are three of the highest grossing films of all time.

Authors have not missed out on the popularity of dinosaurs. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes wrote a book about an expedition to a fabled "Lost World" where dinosaurs roamed. You have to give the Dinosauria credit, as new mediums such as the internet and computer games have evolved, so dinosaurs have found themselves at home. Psychologists would suggest that since these ferocious creatures are long dead, children become fascinated with them as monsters "who can't harm them any more". Many cultures and societies have their own myths about monsters and the supernatural, but for dinosaurs, one of the first things people learn about them is that they are all dead, so they are classified as "safe monsters", dangerous in the extreme but not likely to do us any real harm as all we have these days are their fossils to study.

It's the Mums and Dads

The psychologists may have a point. We have heard many academics and scientists espouse this point of view. However, there may be another contributory factor to dinosaur's enduring popularity. We meet lots of mums and dad who are very proud of their very own young palaeontologist who can pronounce all those difficult dinosaur names and seem to know so much about them. Children pick up a fascination with dinosaurs from books, television programmes, the internet and so on and crucially their parents and guardians seeing a scientific foundation to their play and interest indirectly and often directly encourage them. Young children are amazingly perceptive and can pick up the positive signals given to them by their parents, grandparents and guardians - so they too take a greater interest in the dinosaurs, encouraged by the feedback from the grown ups in their lives.

With the advent of the creative curriculum in England, teachers are using dinosaur based lesson plans and schemes of work with children as young as four years of age, so this link between liking dinosaurs and education is being strengthened.

It seems that although dinosaurs have only been known to science for less than two hundred years they are going to have an enduring impact on generations of children for many years to come.

New Chinese Feathered Dinosaur adds to Confusion over Evolution of Feathers

A paper published in the scientific journal "Nature" is ruffling a few feathers amongst which dinosaur has 500 teeth. A team from the Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature in China have reported on the discovery of a partial skeleton of a small, potentially bipedal dinosaur with feathers. The fossil was found in the early Cretaceous sediments of the Liaoning Formation in north-eastern China.

China Famous for its Feathered Dinosaur Fossils

Feathered dinosaurs from Liaoning have been found before, the region is world- famous for the remarkable fossils of feathered dinosaurs and birds that have been discovered. These creatures drowned in a lake, sinking to the bottom and in most cases they were rapidly buried by fine volcanic ash without much disruption to their remains. Several kinds of feathered Saurischian dinosaurs are known from the Cretaceous sediments of this region, animals such as Sinosauropteryx and Sinorthosaurus for example. However, there are a number of surprising features about this new discovery that have "ruffled a few feathers" according to an Everything Dinosaur spokesperson or alternatively, "has muddied the waters" in a similar comment made by a leading palaeontologist.

Firstly, although only part of this small dinosaur's body has been fossilised, the Chinese team were able to identify limb bones, vertebrae, the hip girdle and most importantly the lower jaw and most of the lower and mid portions of the skull. The animal has been identified as a member of the Heterodontosauridae, a very primitive Ornithischian dinosaur, best known form Early Jurassic deposits from South Africa.

The Heterodontosaurids are believed to be a basal group of the Ornithischian dinosaurs and this is the first time that a fossil of such an animal has been found in China. This specimen has been dated to the early Cretaceous approximately 140 million years ago (Berriasian faunal stage). This new fossil indicates that these dinosaurs, the Heterodontosaurids, survived into the Cretaceous. The Heterodontosaurs are distinguished by their complex teeth. The name Heterodontosauridae means"different-toothed lizards", these little dinosaurs had remarkably advanced dentition. Instead of the simple peg-like teeth seen in other herbivorous dinosaurs of the early Jurassic this group had sharp, pointed, over sized canines and those teeth towards the back of the jaw were flatter and broad, designed for crushing plant matter. It is thought that these dinosaurs may have been omnivores. A general, non-specialised diet may be one reason why these little dog-sized dinosaurs persisted so long in the Mesozoic.

Finding Evidence of Plumage on the Fossils

This information alone, would be enough to excite most scientists but for the Chinese specimen the fossil reveals an even more intriguing attribute - feathers.

The analysis of the dinosaur named Tianyulong confuciusi by the Chinese scientists has revealed the presence of primitive proto-feathers along the back and front of the animal (dorsal and ventral areas). Finding a new feathered dinosaur in Liaoning is not that remarkable given the fantastically rich fossil pedigree of the place, but a feathered Ornithischian, that is a different matter.

Small Dinosaur

The fossil found, represents a sub-adult, it was approximately 1 metre long with a long tail, most probably a bipedal stance and the wonderful Heterodontosaurid dentition is very well-preserved. In the main slab of rock from which the fossil was extracted, the impression of long, filamentous, non-branched feather-like structured can be clearly seen. Tianyulong has been reconstructed as an agile, swift running, mainly bipedal dinosaur that probably had an omnivorous diet catching insects as well as eating plant material.

Feathers on Back and Tail

The artist shows the long, filamentous feathers covering the back and the tail of this dinosaur, however, reference to the scientific report suggests that these long filaments are present along the back, chest and abdomen of this little dinosaur. The artist has also chosen to portray Tianyulong as being covered in a coat of fine feathers, this is largely speculation as we understand that the one specimen found to date of this new type of dinosaur does not confirm that presence of a soft, downy coat.

Ornithischian Dinosaur Fossil

One thing for sure, if this Ornithischian dinosaur did have feathers, then it challenges sciences view on the evolution of modified scales (feathers) as most of the dinosaurs known to be feathered are Theropod, Saurischians.

Dinosaurs are classified into two major groups depending on the arrangement of the bones that comprise the hip girdle.

Dinosaurs are divided into two main orders: Saurischians, which have forward-pointing pubic bones, and Ornithischians, which have backward-pointing pubic bones. The classification of the Ornithischians and Saurischians was first outlined in a scientific paper written by the British palaeontologist Harry Covier Seeley, over 120 years ago. Seeley remarked on the similar types of pelvis certain dinosaurs had, he commented upon their "bird-like" features, as with modern birds the pubis bone at the front of the pelvis projected backwards. With birds, this position of the pubis is believed to be related to efficient breathing enabling muscles to be oxygenated for flight. However, with the Ornithischians, it is believed the backward pointing pubis made room for a large gut - just what you need to digest tough vegetation, as most of the Ornithischians known to date seem to be entirely vegetarian.

With a member of a basal Ornithischian exhibiting proto-feathers this throws into question the exact evolutionary origins of feathers.

Commenting on the find, Dr. Phil Currie of the University of Alberta, Canada stated:

"The find pulls the origin of feathers down into the Triassic, when the Saurischian and Ornithischian lineages of dinosaurs split".

The flight feathers on a bird are flexible, asymmetrical and have a central shaft with vanes that run off either side at angles, the feathers on T. confuciusi are all relatively stiff and lack vanes.

Hai-Lu You, one of the Chinese palaeontologists who described and named Tianyulong confuciusi, believes that the fossil supports the idea of a single evolution of feathers.

"We still have some missing data between T. confuciusi and feathered Theropod dinosaurs, but I think further discovery will fill these gaps," he commented.

If this proves to be the case, then many dinosaurs may once have sported feather-like structures, with descendant species losing the characteristic. The long, filamentous projections may have been used for display, perhaps to deter a rival or attract a mate. If this dinosaur was covered in feathers then the evolution of feathers may have to be put into the Triassic and not the Jurassic. Indeed, many other Ornithischian dinosaurs may have possessed feathers, but their poor fossil preservation in many cases has prevented the feathers being recorded in the fossil record.

Giants Amongst the Dinosaurs - Which was the Biggest Dinosaur of All Time?

One of the most interesting aspects of dinosaurs for children is learning all about how diverse this group of reptiles actually were. For example, to date there have been over 1,000 different species formally named and described. A great many of these known species were quite small, the idea that all dinosaurs were huge is a bit of a misnomer, and dinosaur with 500 teeth which love to have a huge and spectacular dinosaur display often give the wrong impression. As dinosaurs evolved, they filled virtually every niche in the food chain, just as terrestrial mammals do today. If land mammals can range in size from a shrew to an African elephant, then it is not surprising to learn that dinosaurs varied in size too.

But what about the really big dinosaurs? Children love to learn facts and figures about these prehistoric animals and amongst their favourite questions is to enquire which was the biggest dinosaur of all time? To identify the giants among the dinosaurs is a relatively easy task. There is one particular group that grew much bigger than every other known type of dinosaur - indeed some of the members of this group were undoubtedly the biggest, the longest and the heaviest land animals that have ever roamed planet Earth.

A well-known dinosaur such as Triceratops (Triceratops horridus) was big. The largest species of Triceratops is estimated to have been around nine metres in length and it might have weighed as much as seven tonnes. If this species of dinosaur were around today it would be classed as the largest land living animal, with only the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) to rival it. However, Triceratops would have been dwarfed by most of the members of the Sauropoda, a group of long-necked, long-tailed, lizard-hipped dinosaurs, representatives of which can claim to be the biggest land living animals known to science.

Introducing the Sauropods

Put simply, the Sauropods (the name means "lizard foot") were Saurischian, that is belonging to the lizard-hipped clade of dinosaurs that also included the mainly carnivorous Theropods. These plant-eating dinosaurs had small heads, long necks and tails with massive bodies. Their weight was supported by four trunk-like legs and these animals were slow-moving, ponderous creatures. Some of their kind evolved dermal armour and one or two unusual genera even had tail clubs and spikes, similar to the armoured dinosaurs such as the Stegosaurs and the Ankylosaurs. These dinosaurs appear in the fossil record in Upper Triassic strata and they survived right up until the end of the age of dinosaurs. Sauropods would have been familiar to the likes of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurids such as Tyrannosaurus rex. It was the Victorians who first marvelled at the size of these dinosaurs. The first really big dinosaur fossil bones being put on display during the reign of Queen Victoria and it is from this point onwards that the debate as to which was the biggest dinosaur really got going.

Defining the Biggest Dinosaurs

There are many problems with trying to identify which was the biggest of the Sauropods. For a start, most of these colossal creatures are known from only a few fragmentary and far from complete skeletons. Although the size of a dinosaur can be deferred from a few bones such as the femur (thigh bone) using a process related to comparative anatomy it is not precise. The other problem is, new species are being discovered all the time and this can lead to changes in size estimations. Indeed, once a new dinosaur is named and described the resulting press publicity can lead to some inaccurate size estimates becoming highlighted in the media. It seems that adults and children too are interested in record breakers. We recall working on some papers related to the fossilised track way of a large Sauropod found in Upper Jurassic aged rocks in France. The tracks consisted of several metres of clearly defined and very large footprints, some more than a metre in diameter. By the time the press agencies had got hold of the story and seen some of the photographs, there was speculation that the dinosaur that walked over the soft mud that preserved their tracks was one of the biggest of all time.
